Understanding the Role of Culture in Therapy

When we reflect on our family of origin, we may not always realize how deeply culture shapes the way we think, feel, and behave. Cultural background influences our strengths, values, and even our struggles. This is why it’s important to remember that not all treatment modalities work for everyone.

What one person may see as insurmountable trauma, another may view as a source of resilience. In short, therapy is not “one size fits all.”

Building Trust Through Cultural Competence

For therapy to be effective, it requires openness, safety, and flexibility. Clients should feel comfortable speaking their truth without fear of judgment. The therapeutic relationship is built on trust, cultural competence, and curiosity.

Important questions that can guide the process include:

  • What works for me in therapy, and what doesn’t?

  • Where did this behavior or way of thinking come from?

  • How does my cultural background influence the way I see the world?

These conversations help create a treatment plan that truly reflects the individual.

Why It’s Okay to Ask About Your Therapist’s Background

It should be acceptable, not taboo, for clients to ask their therapist about their cultural background, ethnicity, or lived experiences if it feels relevant. These conversations can deepen connection and promote mutual understanding.

Using Culture as a Tool for Growth

Exploring one’s culture in therapy can be a powerful and healing process. It can:

  • Help identify core values and strengths

  • Provide context for behaviors and coping styles

  • Strengthen resilience and emotional regulation

  • Shape treatment goals that feel authentic and sustainable

At its core, multicultural therapy honors the whole person, where they come from, where they are now, and where they hope to go.
